INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY


Chapters of the course:
-Hardware and software.
-Networks (LAN, MAN, WAN, internet), web search engines and cloud-computing.
-Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
-Network devices (router, switch, hub).
-Security (malware, firewall, DMZ, VPN, web proxy server).
-Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access (and with macro-commands).
-Project Management.



Grading Criteria:
-Class Participation and Attendance: 15%.
-Tests: 15%.
-Midterm Exam: 20%.
-Paper: 15%.
-Oral Presentation: 15%.
-Final Exam: 20%.

Mid-term exam – 1 hour – 2 points per question:
Question 1- What is the definition of CPU? Write an example of CPU speed and give two names of CPU manufacturer.
Question 2- What is the definition of HDD? Write an example of HDD capacity and give two differences between HDD and RAM.
Question 3- Write 8 examples of file extension.
Question 4- Write 8 names of Operating System.
Question 5- What are LAN and WAN? What’s the main difference between a LAN and a WAN?
Question 6- What is the definition of DNS? What is the goal of DNS?
Question 7- What is the definition of DHCP? What is the goal of DHCP?
Question 8- Write the names of 8 different kinds of malware.
Question 9- Write the names of 4 security protocols and 4 antivirus software.
Question 10- What are the definition and the goal of HTML? What is the difference between HTML and HTTP?

Question 1 (2 points) - What is the definition of a project? What is the role of the Project Manager?
Question 2 (2 points) - What is a computer’s motherboard? Write the names of two components and a manufacturer of motherboards.
Question 3 (2 points) - Write four security rules to protect your computer from hackers and malware.
Question 4 (2 points) - Write four roles of a web proxy server.
Question 5 (2 points) - What is the definition of IP? Give a difference between IP version 4 and IP version 6 addresses.
Question 6 (1 point) – What are the definitions of URL and HTTPS? What is the difference between URL and HTTPS? Give an example.
Question 7 (1 point) - What is the difference between spam and mail-bombing?
Question 8 (1 point) - What are hoax and phishing? Give an example of hoax and phishing.
Question 9 (1 point) - What is the difference between ransomware and rogues?
Question 10 (1 point) - Is it true to say that internet is a Metropolitan Area Network? Why?
Question 11 (1 point) - What is the definition of DMZ? What is the main goal of a DMZ in IT?
Question 12 (1 point) - What is the main goal of routers? Give a name of a manufacturer of routers.
Question 13 (1 point) - Explain an advantage and a disadvantage of Cloud-computing.
Question 14 (1 point) - What is the definition of VPN?
Question 15 (1 point) - What are the definitions and goals of DNS and DHCP?
